It seems I now spend my days and nights

Pondering one human cruelty after another

It seems that I can no longer find any peace

Witnessing the sheer savagery of my brothers

Sleep seems to come very hard for me these days

My mind lingers on what I saw in New Orleans

And oh how I once truly looked forward to Spring

But now my mind dwells on new horrors it will bring

The annual slaughter of the innocents begins very soon

And the graphic images of dying infant seals now persists

These days I very often wish I could just shut off my mind

But I cannot so I stay up late writing letters and making lists

In 2005 - 300,000 innocent baby seals were clubbed to death

And many of them were very savagely skinned while still alive

Their very bloody corpses left to rot on the ice floes like garbage

For human sealskin jacket and coat markets that continue to thrive

To kill animals that our Mother Earth provides

For sustenance to nourish our bodies is one thing

But to slaughter innocent seal pups only weeks old

For clothing we don’t really need to me horror brings

It seems I now spend my days and nights

Even though most Canadians oppose this annual spring seal slaughter, and it provides less than 5 percent of the yearly income to seal clubbers, both the Canadian government and the Canadian seafood industry continue to support this very needless, and extremely inhumane, butchery.

Seal meat is considered inedible and unfit for human consumption, and there is very little market for it.  And these annual spring seal hunts are mainly directed at the infant seals, called ‘beaters,’ which have very little meat anyway, and which are often only weeks old when savagely clubbed to death for their pelts – which are sold to clothing manufacturers.

And the flesh of these young innocents’ is left to rot on these northern ice floes – just as thousands of bison carcasses were once left to rot out on the great American plains – when gunning them down from moving trains was considered ‘great sport.’

We all sadly know the plight of the American buffalo.  And I very sadly wonder how long before these innocent seals join them.

The international ProtectSeals campaign believes that while Canadian officials can afford to ignore the mounting public outcry of the continued annual slaughter of these innocents, they will ultimately have to listen when money talks.

So far, over 140,000 individuals from around the world, and more than 400 restaurants and other businesses have pledged to boycott Canadian seafood products until this unnecessary slaughter is finally ended – forever.

The website listed below also contains a very graphic video of baby seals being savagely clubbed; many of them left lying on the ice for hours, suffering horrendously, slowly and agonizingly choking to death - in their own blood and vomit – until they are eventually skinned alive.

When I force myself to watch the many horrors occurring in our world today, I often become very sad.  And my sadness deepens more and more these days.
