Listen to Your Heart

She had been aimlessly wandering

The flooded streets of New Orleans

She was a tiny frightened tortoise shell

And life for her had been terribly mean

She was emaciated and forlorn

None of her siblings had survived

She stared morosely from her cage

As if she hadn’t a single friend alive

But every time that I passed her way

I heard an extremely timid little ‘yap’

So every time that I passed her way

I stopped and I placed her on my lap

And as I gently stroked her long matted fur

She would very sadly gaze up into my eyes

This tiny forlorn kitten had touched my heart

She had called out to it with her plaintive cries

So on my very last day at the pet rescue camp

I gently picked her up and placed her in my truck

And as we drove off together I named her ‘Flower’

Hoping she would blossom with a little TLC and luck

And within a relatively short period of time

Our dear old tabby Buddy had befriended her

And these days I now often spot them together

Her yap now sounding much more like a purr

She’s also become very inquisitive about me

As she now follows me all through the house

And her stalking skills are really improving

As she tiptoes after me as quietly as a mouse

But the most wondrous thing of all has recently occurred

She’s begun silently crawling up on our bed every night

Flower has just discovered my wife’s very loving touch

As she snuggles closer with both contentment and delight

This once extremely sad and lonely Katrina victim

Has definitely now begun to blossom and to bloom

And my spouse is extremely glad that I brought her home

Since she believes that winter flowers truly brighten any room
