Poem Artwork
-->

"The face of the water, in time, became a wonderful book,

A book that was a dead language to the uneducated passenger,

But which told its mind to me without reserve,

Delivering its most cherished secrets,

As clearly as if it uttered them with a voice.

And it was not a book to be read once and thrown aside,

For it had a new story to tell every day."

Mark Twain,

Life on the Mississippi

Mark Twain’s words have always inspired me

Since childhood, he’s sparked my wanderlust

So periodically, I just ramble about exploring

His wisdom is something I shall always trust

I always wonder what’s around the next bend

For something new in nature, I can’t wait to see

So this trip instead of north, we journeyed south

Along a wondrous river, The Mighty Mississippi

We soon traveled through the Mark Twain Wildlife Refuge

A vast haven for migratory birds, song birds, and water fowl

Over 45,000 acres scattered along 350 miles of the Mississippi

And a place so wondrous, it made the dogs and I want to howl

This wildlife refuge is located along The Great Mississippi Flyway

Every spring and fall, its skies are filled with the songs of migratory birds

And it is here, that over 500 bald eagles spend the entire year raising families

Watching them gliding and fishing in open water, is truly a sight beyond words

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed

By the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.

So throw off the bowlines.

Sail away from the safe harbor.

Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore.

Dream.

Discover.”

Mark Twain

And very sadly, twenty years from now,

There will be far less wonders to behold;

So get out there, and enjoy Nature today,

While some of it is still alive, and vibrantly bold.

A moving tribute to Twain and the mighty Mississippi. An inspiring write Mr. Ed. Having gone down river on the General Lee paddleboat, I can relate a little. In a small way I feel these freedoms when on motorcycle trips smelling the smells and feeling the land and it's sights. It's wonderful.
All the best, *Glen*

ED...

SAMUEL CLEMMONS - One of my all time favorite authors also. He was the harbinger of using the VERNACULAR - the written word, just as people spoke it.

Grammar, punctuation and spelling were not the critical factors - the idea, the mood, the feeling - that is what must be imparted!

As a literary vagabond more times than I can admit it, I regress to Mark Twain's dusty streets of old Mississip towns where Tom and Huck used to paint picket fences for a slice of melon.

Mark Twain, and you plumbed the depths perfectly and the misty mistery of the old man river, that runs through America and its finest romance, America could not be, without the Mississippi! Thank you for this wonderful trip, it was a real vacation. Bless You! Jasmin Horst

Excellent and wonderful journey sir...I did cast off those lines many years ago and did such a thing. I look back now and never regreted hitch-hiking the lower 48 and canada...people I knew back then called me crazy...but they just wished that they could have done the same...this is one thing I enjoy about your work...the call to nature remains strong.

I remember when I first saw the Mississip and the paddle boats in the south. I can remember thinking how fragile american houses look, and the river will be here forever when most building didn't look like they had more than 50 yrs left....
Then I drove to Gracelands, lol..

He was and will always be one of my favorite authours as he kept my mind and imagination alive and blossoming when I was a sickly child confined all too often to a bed in a sickroom. His stories and the stories of other authours like him were my escape to the world. thank you for reminding me and now I will visit my library soon to rediscover him.

From Hannibel Missouri to the mouth of the Mississippi you brought back some fond memories of when I ws there. nature is the best place to ever spend quality time. My children all enjoyed seeing nature up close. I think out of everything I taught them, nature was one of the more important.
Love and thanks!

You always give me Wanderlust when you return from your travels, Dad. The feelings you evoke here remind me of how the Germans seem to feel about old Father Rhine. And I thought this was going to be a poem about how old Mother Mississip got to get to "pi"... :)) xx
