A Five Part Mississippi River Odyssey,

From the Mouth of the River, To Its Source;

So Very Many Interesting Things Along The Way,

And My Four Dogs Were My Co-Pilots, Of Course.

“The real voyage of discovery,

Consists not in seeking new landscapes,

But in having new eyes.”

Marcel Proust

I had traveled some 1,000 miles

Back to the city of New Orleans

For a Katrina Memorial Dedication

But Gustav had other plans it seems

After evacuating the Big Easy, so very abruptly

We anxiously awaited this huge storm’s passing

And thankfully, it spared the city another direct hit

Which for so many there, was a marvelous blessing

So, as others began returning to New Orleans

I decided to travel north, along the Mississippi

The one river that has fascinated me all of my life

Along its ancient banks, there are many sights to see

The great river that had inspired Mark Twain

Father ‘Misi-ziibe’ to many Native Americans

A body of water, which has always intrigued

I’ve never tired of traveling it, again and again

As the five of us once again journeyed northward

I now realized how important this river was in my life

I also now wondered what two of my dogs had thought

Having seen their former home, for a few pleasant nights

-To Be Continued-

Looking forward to hearing more!! I grew up in Illinois and have spent a good deal of time in the vicinity of Memphis, TN, and between that and being a fan of Mark Twain's work -- especially Huckleberry Finn --, I feel a strong affinity for Big Muddy. Would like to ride an excursion boat north to south, but it doesn't look like it's in the cards. Anyway, keep having a blast, y'all!! Pet the doggies for me~!! Pea <3

You should've brought along a copy of M.T.'s "Life on the Mississippi" to see how things have really changed. I envy you though - too bad your not in a raft but then you'd have to go back the other way
Hope you can journalize what you see... best, Mike

It would be neat to run the river on the water somehow...there is a Great Circle that boaters do coming from the east coast thru to the chicago area and then I guess somehow south onto the Mighty Mississip' then into the gulf around southern florida and up the intercoastal to their point of origin...sounds a great trip, Someday...ed

"Misi-ziibe" should be lighted by night by Manitu stars to guide you away from the shore rocks, and by day with the same sun that the Sioux war shield hold for those braves to travel.
