-Part II Of A Five Part River Odyssey-

Life on the Mississippi
Our first stop on our new river journey
Was a Missouri town called Hannibal
The childhood home of Mark Twain
As a boy, this old river, to him, it called
This small town and this river were the inspiration
For Twain’s characters, Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn
And here is where his ardent desire to be a Captain
On a grand, steam-powered riverboat, would begin
We arrived at this spot, on the grand old Mississippi
Just as dawn was breaking, amidst the rolling river fog
And suddenly, through the mist, I could picture Twain
I even heard his steamboat whistle, as did my four dogs
I have been a fan of this remarkable American writer and humorist
From my earliest days as a young boy, growing up in the Midwest
And his numerous writings quickly sparked my interest in this river
For the past 50 years, just standing along its banks, fills me with zest
And how I would have loved living in Mark Twain’s historic American era
Traveling on a grand paddleboat, down the length of this mighty Mississippi
I would have eagerly boarded such a vessel way up river in St. Paul, Minnesota
And traveled upon it, all the way down, to that grand old town of New Orleans
But like so many other wonderful things that have now passed into history
These grand old river steamboats are now just a remnant of our nation’s past
But as my dogs and I kept staring out into that thick, early morning, river fog
I knew, that for me, this would be yet another travel memory, that would last
