“No guest is so welcome,

That he will not become a nuisance,

Within three days.”

Titus Maccius Plautus

An uninvited guest has arrived,

He just came roaring into town;

How quickly I had forgotten,

That he had not been around.

He pulled up in his ice mobile,

Parking right outside my door;

And he huffed, and he puffed,

Soon rushing in along my floor.

I was quite shocked at first,

About all I could do was stare;

And suddenly – as if by evil magic,

This uninvited guest was everywhere.

He now scurried along beside me,

He breathed ice upon my dome;

He chilled me to the very bone,

And made himself right at home.

“Ho, Ho, Ho,

I’m back, my startled little friend!

I’m here to chill your very blood,

To the extremely bitter, frozen end!”

“But why are you here,

And what have I done?

For you to act so badly,

To a lowly mortal son?”

“Why nothing - nothing at all,

My unprepared human friend;

I’m sent here each and every year,

To test your mettle, yet once again.

“And I assure you it’s nothing personal;

Don’t you extremely silly humans see?”

Old Man Winter began grinning at me,

And then he laughed – so hysterically.

After several silent minutes,

I found myself laughing, too;

I pulled out my jug of bourbon,

And poured a few shots for two.

“Here’s to you, Old Man Winter,

May you enjoy your lengthy stay.”

But silently, in my now frozen heart,

To the Maiden of Spring, I did pray.

As I pondered this lovely work, I realized why property in Dan Diego is so expensive. The cost for eternal spring, measured in dollars. Stay warm, my friend.

Very clever and entertaining! Enjoyed from a "warmer" clime, but strangely this year "your guest" must be sending some of his "relatives" further south. We'll see how long they stay here in Florida - 29 tonight.

Don't know why it happens so quickly, but it does. Winter's here whether we like it or not...best make the best of it while it lasts, for all days seem to fly by so quickly. Loved it! Love Holly

An innovative write: one poem talking to another. Snow or human, Plautus' quote may offer a note of truth. Well done.

ahhh I think he gets a bad rep myself, as I look out through my window and see our first snowfall coming down...after all he just puts the flowers and trees to bed so they can wake up in the spring full of life and energy.

Old man winter surely is here in PA. Windy and very cold for a few days or more now. I don't like it, but must abide with it. You put it in words that chill me to the bone too. But I will survive and spring will come as the holidays go by and better things will be done. Winter is a time to clean out unused things and give to the poor and help others too as one author wrote on the den today. Thanks you for this cool cool write.
