And what have we done;

Another year over now,

And a new one just begun.”

So This is Christmas

I hate going shopping

Especially at huge malls

What I saw just yesterday

Truly saddens and appalls

There he sat at the entrance

On a sleeping bag by a wall

There also stood his old dog

At the entrance to this mall

I could see he was a teenager

And he looked so damned sad

I wondered if he had run away

A boy of his age should be glad

“What’s the trouble here, son?

Did you and your dog run away?

Won’t your parents be missing you?”

And I couldn’t believe what he had to say

“Nah, we lost our home a few weeks ago,

Mom and I are now stayin with my aunt;

And my Dad, he’s still in the Army in Iraq,

I really don’t know when he’s comin back.

“And I really don’t mind we lost our home,

But my aunt, she don’t like Blackie, at all;

And Blackie here, my Dad really loves him,

So me and Blackie, we hang out at the mall.”

I now stood there speechless for several minutes,

Then I gave him a few dollars, and sadly walked away;

I just don’t understand what’s happened to my America,

I won’t forget a horrendous trip to the mall just yesterday.

So this is Christmas,

And what have we done;

An abysmal year in America,

And now, even kids have no fun.

Many valiant military families are in trouble,

Their foreclosure rates, the highest in the country;

I truly hope a much better year lies ahead for them,

They’ve already sacrificed everything, for you and me.

This is a stinging report, Ed. It's easy to quote the sayings of an old uncle of mine, and reply that the aunt probably needs a good butt kicking. Poor kid. Poor veterans facing the harsh and thankless side of life....Jerry

I think that people are now realizing that homelessness is only one lost paychechek away. Be it through layoff or illness, it is just around the corner for a lot of folks who felt secure just a few months ago.

The next 6 or 8 months do NOT look too happy...The word bleak may not be the right word...best to knuckle down and start stockpiling food and what we need to live on...as a worse time could be upon us & there may not be any way of stopping it...Be Safe, Ed & Rufuz

And, can we imagine what the soldier in Iraq might feel, knowing his wife and son have gone homeless in America? That has got to hurt. And there is more changing than easily meets the eye. Storefront retail sales were hurtfully down this Christmas as people were not coming in to the malls to splurge this year. Simply sounds like a money shortage ... until you learn that Amazon.com had their best year ever. An awful picture is emerging -- so many people hurting while everyone else is not caring. May 2009 be a time of swiftly correcting our way of being.

enough to make me sick and humiliated that we should have this happen in Amrica! People like that boys aunt should be ashamed,and the government should find a home for them .I can't say anymore it just baffles me!

Ed, you are so in tune to all the pain and suffering in this world, I feel it through this poem. Yes it does look bleak, but I feel that things are going to change in the next year..We all have to stay positive and help each other get through all of this.
