In Memory of a Friend,

On The Anniversary of His Death

“There was blood on the saddle and blood all around,

And a great big puddle of blood on the ground.

A cowboy lay in it, all covered with gore,

And he never will ride any broncos no more.”

Tex Ritter,

Blood On The Saddle

Old Pete was a big man

He stood six-foot three

He loved to ride his pony

Said it made him feel free

He served his nation honorably

In that bloody old Vietnam War

But when he returned back home

Things were different than before

His kind were looked down on

He couldn’t get any real work

He had those terrible flashbacks

And he was cruelly labeled a jerk

He soon became a recluse

Riding alone on the prairie

Even his former sweetheart

Someone else did she marry

I first met Pete many years ago

At a large VA Hospital out west

He figured he’d been left behind

And he couldn’t get past his stress

So he soon moved out to the country

And lived with his horse under the stars

He often wondered what had happened

As he now drank too much liquor at the bar

They found Pete a few years ago

He had shot himself and his horse

He was buried in a pauper’s grave

Branded a crazy old lunatic of course

War’s hell can truly torment a man

I hope old Petey’s now finally at rest

We need to start honoring our veterans

And stop treating them like crazy old pests

Rest in Peace, My Friend

They are needed..they are used up..they are forgotten
The disposable soldier...as more are born. This tribute will be an honor to many!

Too sad for words, ED! Prayers that one day we won't have to write anymore of mans inhumanity to man...

Indeed we do and the time has come for our governments to treat veterans as they should be treated...with dignity, respect and appreciation.

ED - FINE TRIBUTE!

"where have all the flowers gone?
gone to graveyards, every one -
when will they ever learn?
when will they ever learn?"

peace - Tom.

thatsure brought a tear to my ey Mr. Ed. that was a commentation of what happened to our soldiers who fought in the Viet Nam War. Fortunately our boys are not being treated like that name coming back from Afghanistan.

I'm so sorry about your friend. May he and his horse rest in peace together.

There are those that cripple them and then ride away not looking back, hiding in the bushes now. I think Georg is right the new President will try to heal some of those long festering wounds of neglect, I sure hope so! Blessings! Jasmin Horst

Amen, Ed, amen. We better start treating those who've served with the respect and honor they rightly deserve. They should lack for NOTHING. They are heroes who step into shoes few would fill.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend and his horse. :(

This is so sad because it is so true. I remember my friends coming back from that war and none would talk about it. They held all that torment in...The shame, violence and pain of that war that no one wanted to hear about. God bless these VETS for we surely didn't...Wonderful write ED and so touching. Love and hugs, Bonnie

Hoorah! now we are talking! Old Petey had many buddies around with the same predicament (my heart is black with rage) but maybe there is hope yet. I saw the picture of Obaba in Veteran's Day in the company of a female soldier at attention on two steel pipe legs.
I never saw a Veteran besides a President Elect or otherwise.

Georg
