Part Four – Journey West
“I was totally unprepared,
For that Revelation,
Called the Dakota Bad Lands.”
Frank Lloyd Wright
On any trip that I take out west
I journey through these Badlands
Truly a place of historic proportions
And a place that I always find grand
Millions of years, of captivating intrigue
Jagged rock buttes and deep dark canyons
The first time I ever saw it, I marveled at it
A place that draws me back again and again
Earth’s richest deposit of preserved fossils
Gigantic pigs, turtles, and saber-tooth cats
Huge dinosaurs, and even an ancient ocean
Right here in the Badlands, they all once sat
Thirty seven million years, of Earth’s Life
Colored stone, mixed in, with ancient bone
Each and every time, that I now wander here
I still marvel at this place and I never feel alone
When the Lakotas first gazed upon this place
They quickly named it Mako Sika – ‘Bad Land’
When early pioneers came here to eke out a living
They found that farming here, was not very grand
Today, over 240,000 acres, are now a national park
And here still reside, some truly fascinating creatures
Like the bighorn sheep, swift fox, and black-foot ferret
History, Mystery, and Wildlife Are All Badland Features
On any trip that I take out west,
I journey through these Badlands;
Truly a place of historic proportions,
And a place that I always find grand.
And, it’s places just like this in America,
We must preserve, for future generations;
Take a trip out to these ancient Badlands,
Millions of Years of Life – What a Sensation.
