Part Five – Journey West

“I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes,

When it wants to tell something on its mind,

But it can’t make itself understood,

So it can’t rest easy in the grave.”

Mark Twain

I like haunted old western hotels

Almost as much as I like old caves

My wife doesn’t care for them at all

She says I’m a crazy gringo, not brave

But when we go on wandering trips, together

I like to surprise her, with a haunted hotel or two

There are many good ones, in eerie old New Mexico

And Deadwood, in South Dakota, has quite a few, too

I often visit the town of Deadwood, it’s here Wild Bill got shot

His ghost is still seen wandering about the town’s gambling halls

And old Sheriff Seth Bullock, still wanders his hotel late at night

Although he did die in old Room 211, way back in 1919, after all

Many guests here at the old Bullock Hotel have heard his footsteps

They have heard him calling out their names, filling them with fright

A real frightened young boy became lost in the hotel’s dark corridors

But he claims the sheriff was real nice to him, when he saw him that night

And, you just never know what might happen, when you stay at this place

Lights and appliances and showers and sinks seem to have a life of their own

The wily old Sheriff still seems to like to play lots of pranks on his guests here

And when he’s in a real bad mood, many a plate or fork or old glass, is thrown

They tell me a tough old cowboy was stayin at the old Bullock Hotel, awhile back

And when he checked in, he made a real big fuss, about not believing in old ghosts

Well, would you believe, he found himself being shoved out of his room, stark naked

That now ‘believing’ old cowboy no longer makes his ‘no such thing as a ghost’ boast

Since my brother Jersey refuses to go camping or cave exploring with me

I’d really like to take him along on my next visit, to eerie old Deadwood

I think a real nice late night chat with the old owner of the Bullock Hotel

Would probably do my cranky old Jersey Devil Brother, a world of good

And if you want to read another one,

About a haunted old hotel in New Mexico,

Check out my old posted poem- ‘Hauntings,’

It’s another fabulously eerie old place, to go.

I'd like to sleep in peace, so I'll leave the haunted hotels to their guests of honor. No use me screaming awake the dead, if one of them should crawl in my bed - excellent write, Ed.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
