Our Memorial Weekend

Traditions Always Include

Wearing Our Buddy Poppies,

Visiting a Veterans’ Cemetery,

And Planting Our Spring Garden.

“Kiss of the sun, for pardon,

Songs of the birds, for mirth,

You're closer to God in a garden,

Than any place else, on Earth.”

Dorothy Frances Gurney

I always rise before the dawn

On this Memorial Day weekend

To plant flowers and vegetables

All summer, their gifts will not end

I wake my spouse extremely early

Our pets sense something in the air

We all rush outdoors to greet this day

Such lovely bird melodies, everywhere

Geraniums, for our huge planting pots

Impatiens, to vividly color our backyard

Wildflowers, which will line our walkways

Planting is so enjoyable, not at all very hard

The soil smells so vibrantly fresh and alive

The flowers we’ve selected are all quite divine

My gardening spade has been patiently waiting

A gift from my grandmother, who is on my mind

After all of our flowers have been very joyously planted

We’ll head over to our carefully prepared vegetable garden

Planting tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and herbs and spices

Which will all so gloriously enrich our meals, until summer’s end

And when our work is finally all done, this May planting day

My wife and I will sit on a backyard bench, and marvel at it all

Basking in our tiny piece of paradise, here on God’s green earth

Thanking Him for nature’s bounty, and for our gifts, big and small

“God almighty first planted a garden,

And, indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures.”

Sir Francis Bacon

Wonderful write, Ed. Gardening is therapy-whether it be in flower beds, container gardening or on a high-rise deck or indoor planters. You two share a great life! I'm transplanting all my flowers and plants into pots from the old house. Can't leave them behind 'cause they're my "babies". Have a joyous weekend you two...Lin

Hi Mr. Ed, that's what we used to do with Mom when I was growing up. I'm not a gardener, but I LOVE harvest time! I tell people now I'll be there for the harvest! Thank you for sharing your gift...

Yes! And so far, we have not taken care of it as he had asked. Is it too late to change that?
God bless,
Lew

Went to the forest after the rain cleared off and the sun graced us with an handful of rays. Suddenly the birds started to talk on each other's beaks and trees let cold drops it my glasses as I went.
But the perfume...the perfume of the forest with her face just washed off of that allergic provoking pollen...was just welcoming.

The gifts of the garden is being in it with heart and soul totally. I have that little poem at top hanging on my trellis, a gift from a neighbour, and it is very apt and insightful indeed.
I would say more, but that is where I am at the moment ha.
Blessings! Jasmin Horst

Ed, your poem makes me want to get outside and start planting. With all the rain we've had here this week, a garden would be plenty hydrated. Have a wonderful time with planting that garden.
