“By the shores of Gitchee Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood the Wigwam of Nokomis,
Daughter of the Moon.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,
From The Song of Hiawatha
Every year, just about this time
I get a yearning, deep in my soul
To head out to the Gitchee Gumee
Since childhood, I have loved it so
I love walking its rocky shores
I love watching the fog roll in
I love gazing into its vastness
So very much history lies within
Maybe, I’ll visit an historic old lighthouse
Or perhaps, the old Maritime Museum
Maybe, I’ll head up to Whitefish Point
And watch the Fall Bird Migration begin
Maybe, I’ll wander old Hiawatha National Forest
Maybe, I’ll camp under a pine and gaze at the moon
Maybe, I’ll cruise along its rocky shoreline in a boat
And if I am lucky, I will once again, get to hear a loon
The vast old Shipwreck Coast is a favorite destination of mine
Over 300 ships have met their fate here on old Gitchee Gumee
And every time I listen to ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’
A vision of those 29 courageous men fighting a storm envelops me
And each and every time that I head up to the Big-Sea-Water
I take along an old tattered and torn copy of Longfellow’s tale
And when the gods are smiling down on me, on a moonlit night
I can sometimes see Hiawatha, Nokomis, or an old ghost ship’s sail
Every year, just about this time,
I get a yearning, deep in my soul,
To head out to the Gitchee Gumee,
Since childhood, I have loved it so.
