Bridge Across Time

“Let every man praise

The bridge that carries him over.”

An English Proverb

Music: The Journey

I like to cross it

Both day and night

A thing of sheer beauty

A thing of magical delight

It was constructed back in 1957

It stretches nearly five long miles

I first crossed it, nearly 50 years ago

Today, it still brings me thrills and smiles

Mighty Mac spans the ancient Straits of Mackinac

Connecting the upper and lower parts of Michigan

Lake Michigan to its west & Lake Huron to its east

And I never tire of crossing over it, yet again and again

Just north of Mighty Mac, in the town of St. Ignace

There is an old museum, and a park, that I like to visit

The Museum of Ojibwa Culture depicts early native life

And in the old park, near this Mighty Mac, I will often sit

Here, as I gaze off into the ancient Straits of Mackinac

I can suddenly envision tiny birchbark canoes down below

The native peoples of this ancient, wondrous, wooded paradise

Living their very simple lives, amidst nature’s majesty, so long ago

The town of St. Ignace was established way back in the year 1671

And long ago, it was a bustling hub of early Native American trade

As I get back in my truck to journey onward into the great northwood

I realize how much their history has impacted my life, in so many ways

I too love that bridge. I remember waayy back before it built and you had to wait hours to get a car ferry to cross. Do you remember that? My folks used to take us camping in the UP. Great memories. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the tour but you see nuthin' until walking across the Golden Gate eastern brother, and sometimes you can do it with clouds coming inside the bay just level with the bridge to give the impression of walking on clouds! beat that, eastern brother!

You know so much about this corner (BIG corner) of the world and its history. It is sad to imagine how wild and pure it once was but then again few people appreciated its beauty back then because they were SO busy surviving...unless your were Native American.
