Poem Artwork

Pictured Above:

Our Flower from New Orleans,

And One of My Many Loon Paintings

“No sadder sound salutes you,

Than the clear, wild laughter,

Of the loon.”

Celia Thaxter

Anyone who knows me

Knows that I love loons

They are my favorite birds

I love listening to their tunes

And they, too, are now heading south

I sorely miss them, each and every fall

My only consolation this winter will be

All the many loon paintings on my walls

And when my sadness at their yearly departure starts creeping in

I pull out my old ‘loon yodel’ flute I bought at an old trading post

Over the years, I have gotten fairly good at imitating ‘loon songs’

But of my ‘odd behaviors’ my fluting aggravates my wife the most

So these days, I now wait until she leaves the house for awhile

And the reaction of our many pets to my loon calls fascinates me

They seem to put our felines like Flower, into some sort of trance

While two of our dogs, Tater and Little Jack, dance around, in glee

If you happen to hear a haunting loon call, in the dead of winter

It just might be me, with canines Tater and Little Jack, by my side

Since my irritated spouse spends a lot of time indoors, until spring

On cold snowy mornings, I’ll be out and about ‘looning’ with pride

Anyone who knows me,

Knows that I love loons;

They are my favorite birds,

I even love ‘fluting’ their tunes.

There is a place near the Southern Oregon Coast called Loon Lake, about 10-11 miles east of Reedsport, Oregon. At Loon Lake, the Loons have been coming there for thousands of years, OK, for a long time. Check it out.

Cheers,
Dan

There now talk about a perfect title, but consolation, birds seem to know better than to hang out in bad weather, at least most of them.
Bless you friend! Jasmin Horst

I can certainly understand your love of these remarkable birds, as once avid fisherman so many early mornings and sunsets spent on lakes and beaver dams fishing as they sang to me my own private concert.

Boy I haven't heard a loon in years. As a kid I used to call back to them thinking I had them fooled. (I didn't). PS. I think your cat is part owl. Patrick

I love this poem Mr. Ed. Winter takes away so many things but it has a beauty of its own. From now on whenever I hear a loon call I'll think of you and your wonderful poem. The graphic is perfect also.

PeeWee, you should start wearing those thick eyeglasses, cos, first, that's ain't a cat there but a weird looking owl trying to pass a a loon (loony) and second, didn't tell ya our Ma to stop bothering anything with feathers? Mean Tall Woman included?

Edvard, Ole Brother

PS, hope to see you in that Swedish castle I diddled from an aristocrat here.

I love that piccy! And this write. It's alright to act a bit loony every now and again, it keeps us sane. And while I can't imitate the haunting call, doesn't stop me from trying. LOL Well done, Ed, give Flower and the rest of your babies pats and purrs from me. =]

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Flower reminds me of Molly, a cat I used to know. Except for the stripe, she could pass for her! Love her ears. =]
