“History is a symphony of echoes heard and unheard;
It is a poem, with events as verses.”
Charles Angoff
I love wandering about old ghost towns
I have visited many, throughout the west
They are nostalgic, historical, and often sad
Dating back to a rugged era, and many a quest
This old town, down in southern New Mexico
Was first named Birchville, way back in 1837
When gold was discovered, many flocked here
The population of 9,000, thought it was heaven
But my spouse’s ancestors, the Apaches, lived here
They didn’t appreciate these newcomers on their land
So they began raiding this town, and killing the miners
Reclaiming their sacred Pinos Altos, was now their plan
War between these ancient natives, and these gold miners
Raged on for quite awhile, with many dead, in both groups
But when the Apaches surrendered, and the gold played out
This once bustling western town, quickly perished, all too soon
Today, whenever I wander through this place, and gaze into its buildings
I often hear faint whispers, and spot shadows, on the town’s dusty streets
Many a historical figure, including Judge Roy Bean, and even old Cochise
Left their footprints here, and perhaps, even their spirits, for visitors, to meet
A Fascinating Historical Tidbit:
Old Judge Roy Bean’s brother, Sam,
Was once the Sheriff of this ghost town;
For a time, they ran a store and a saloon here,

Amazing, the ultimate lose-lose situation that played out for trinkets. Patrick
