-On The Extremely Sad 40th Anniversary of Earth Day-

Other living creatures,
We will always be savages.”

Two Hundred Years Ago
What an abysmal species we are
Killing, is still all we humans know
We don’t even search for alternatives
We’re now escalating this horror show
In our increasing penchant, to kill off other species
We have already abandoned ‘Protection Legislation’
We now ignore, The Marine Mammal Protection Act
And Endangered Species Act, with mis-guided elation
Wolves, once protected, are all now being gunned down
Since they eat elk we want to display on our trophy walls
All of the wild horses are being rounded up and slaughtered
For the remaining grass - cattle and sheep ranchers want it all
Sea lions are now being trapped, and killed
For daring to eat ‘our’ ever dwindling salmon
In case you have not followed the news lately
Elimination of non-human neighbors is our plan
Exterminators are now being hired, by our cities
To destroy waterfowl eggs, laid at our many ponds
Coyotes and bears, are being shot down, as ‘nuisances’
As Stewards of this Earth, we have abandoned the bond
And unbelievably, many now want the Whaling Ban lifted
Since whales also eat the oceans’ now rapidly vanishing fish
As our own species now skyrockets, to ever increasing numbers
We human beings will escalate our non-human species Death Wish
Worst of all, most of us don’t even care, about any of this abysmal slaughter
Most of us simply ignore our increasing penchant, to eliminate other life forms
What a horrendous, life-less, world, we will be leaving to our future generations
A world we are rapidly decimating, since Killing, is now accepted as ‘The Norm’
And the saddest part of all this increasing slaughter
Is that it will all too very soon prove to be, for naught
Earth’s resources will not sustain our increasing numbers
One day, killing other humans for their food, will be taught
Back in the year 1950, only about 2.5 billion humans lived on Earth;
In 2050, with 10 billion living humans, what will human life be worth?
What an abysmal species we are,
Killing, is still all we humans know;
We don’t even search for alternatives,
We’re now escalating this horror show.
And we have sadly learned nothing at all,
Since that First Earth Day,
Forty Years Ago.
