While many of us are filled, with heartbreak
Over the horrific, and life-ending, Gulf Oil Spill
Others, are already celebrating, another Big Oil Deal
To pipe tar sands oil, down from Canada - what a thrill
Big Oil companies are now, clear-cutting forests
To extract tar sands oil, from under, green woodland
They now plan to expand, their oil producing networks
Leaving a vast trail of death and destruction – how grand
Extracting forest tar sands oil, may be, even more destructive
Than drilling for black gold, more than a mile deep, in the ocean
Thousands and thousands of birds and animals, will be displaced
Thousands and thousands of acres of woodland, brought to an end
To produce this tar sands oil, these oil companies, chop down entire forests
They pollute and they drain, vital wetlands and rivers, and haul away the soil
The result - the complete annihilation of nature, and its irreplaceable ecosystems
So that a few, can make millions and millions of dollars, enjoying tar sand spoils
Shamefully, our own nation, is the only country, that purchases this forest tar sands oil
Since extraction, produces many times the amount of pollution, as conventional drilling
Please contact your legislators, and the White House, and demand we stop this insanity
Or very soon, to both our oceans and to our forests, complete annihilation, we will bring
Many Of Us In America Today, Have Now Grown Extremely Weary,
Of Lame Political Rhetoric, That Oil Extraction Means Cheap Gasoline;
With 400 Plus Oil Rigs, Operating On Our Gulf, For a Very Long Time,
Higher Gas Prices, and Oil-Drenched Shorelines, Are All We Have Seen.
All Our God-Given Oceans, Forests, and Mountain Ranges,
Are Now, Under Attack, These Truly Sad, Greed-Filled Days;
And, We Sadly Wonder How Many, Will Finally See The Light,
And How Many, Will Still Remain Deaf, Dumb, and Blind, Today.
Mining for tar sands oil requires stripping thousands of acres of fertile forest land, and using massive amounts of water. In fact, it has been estimated that once this tar sands project in Alberta, Canada is completed, it will have devastated an area the size of Florida, and consumed millions of gallons of fresh water.
Oil derived from tar sands also has serious impacts on climate even before it is burned – studies show that extraction and processing of tar sands oil generates 5 to 10 times more carbon dioxide emissions than conventional oil. Processing and refining this tar sands oil also generates major amounts of toxic and carcinogenic (cancer-causing) contaminants, which can spread for miles over human and animal habitats.
