Sunrise, in the great northwood
I stand in awe, at the lakeshore
No matter how often that I do
My heart and soul, want more
I first stood in awe, like this
Well over fifty long years ago
As a young boy, at a summer camp
The day that a lake, captured my soul
A young city boy, enamored of nature
An eager student, of its magical treasures
Since that first wondrous day of discovery
Hundreds of lakes, have brought me pleasure
I have greeted the dawn, at many lakeshores
Up in Canada, in Minnesota, and in Wisconsin
Each one of them different, yet all mesmerizing
Since that first dawn, when that first lake, crept in
I have greeted these lakeshore dawns, with my friends
With my spouse, and with numerous animal companions
At times, I have stood at the lakeshores, completely alone
Yet, never really alone, when a brand new lake day, begins
On these truly magical mornings, when I have wandered here
The many melodious forest birds, have always accompanied me
They always seem to be just as enamored, as I’ve always been
As I gaze out at the rising sun, and they sing to it, up in the trees
On this particular lakeshore dawn, I stand here in awe, with my canines
We have been brought here by a sage old woodpecker, who reminded me
That no matter where I may wander and travel, on this vast planet of ours
These lakes and these woods, will hold my heart and soul, for all of eternity
Sunrise, in the great northwood,
I stand in awe, at the lakeshore;
No matter how often that I do,
My heart and soul, want more.
