These blazing hot Dog Days of Summer
Have not been kind to Man’s Best Friend
And, our continued cruelty and callousness
So very sadly these days, never seems to end
So many horrible stories on the news, these days
Of canines now being left inside, inferno-like cars
And, asinine excuses that people still come up with
“I wasn’t gone very long; Oh, I didn’t go very far.”
It doesn’t take very long at all, in this wretched heat
For the inside of a vehicle, to reach over 120 degrees
I was on my way out of a grocery store, just yesterday
When someone yelled, “Will someone help me, please!”
A very distraught woman was attempting to get a dog out
Of a stifling hot car; she didn’t ignore his yelps and cries
It wasn’t her car, and it wasn’t her pet inside, suffocating
But she wasn’t about to let this tiny, sweltering victim, die
I helped her pry down the window on this dog’s inferno
She grabbed the little guy, and gave him some cool water
We both believed she had done the right thing for this dog
But when his owner arrived, all he did, was curse and holler
“How dare you break into my car and touch my dog,
I should call the police, and have you both arrested;
I certainly wasn’t gone very long, and my dog is fine;
You meddling animal rights idiots are god-damned pests.”
As this guy now drove off in a huff, with his still panting dog
The woman thanked me for my help, and we headed on our way
When I got home, I told my spouse what had happened at the store
She shook her head and told me some stories she read, just yesterday
In Maryland, a 14-year-old Golden retriever died in a car while her owner shopped at Costco, on a 104-degree day.
In New York, a six-pound Maltese died in a 140-degree car while his owner went for a cool, refreshing swim in a state park.
In Wisconsin, a woman left her pit bull in her car at Wal-Mart. Police broke the car window and tried to save the dog, but he died at the scene.
