I was on a rescue mission
Searching for another stray
When I came upon this one
Far too many like her, today
She was lying on a deserted street
On a horridly hot summer’s night
Who knows how far she had come
Thirsty, hungry, so filled with fright
Now, she bolted up at my footsteps
Quickly hiding behind a garbage can
When I drew near, she snarled at me
Yet another tormented victim of man
I managed to put her in a small carrier
And brought her home, three days past
After food, water, and much needed rest
She’s doing better, learning to trust, at last
At first, she cowered when I would touch her
Expecting more cruelty, abuse, and bodily harm
Now, her tail wags and she gives me tiny wet kisses
Gentleness and compassion have worked like a charm
Our other former street orphans have welcomed her
My spouse has named her ‘Lupita,’ a name we like
She’s not a young pup, she’s not used to a good life
Whatever time she has left, we will care for this tyke
And our vet just informed me,
That Little Lupita is pregnant;
It certainly looks as if we will be
Foster Parents to newborns, again.
There are far too many,
Just like this little waif,
Out there, these days;
Abandoned,
And Forgotten,
And So Terribly Afraid.
