An Old Wives’ Tale
Music: The Birds and The Bees
Yet another damaging summer thunderstorm
Downed trees and flooding, again, all around
As I went outside, after mopping our basement
I soon spotted a very tiny nestling on the ground
The violent winds had surely ripped it from its nest
I peered skyward, and saw its mother peering down
It was still alive, and it had to be returned, very quickly
So I scooped it up in my hands from the cold wet ground
I now raced back inside, and I handed it to my startled wife
Who screamed, “Oh, God, its mother will never take it back!”
I couldn’t resist replying “Old Wife, that’s an Old Wives’ Tale.”
And now I raced back outside to grab a ladder from the old rack
Soon, I was climbing that old ladder, with this tiny newborn in my hand
Quickly depositing it back into its comfy nest, with its other tiny siblings
As my wife and I now stood below the nest, watching what would happen
Momma Sparrow arrived with nourishment for all, including her fallen nestling
My wife very quickly gave me one of her famous ‘I can’t believe it’ looks
As I quickly explained to her that most birds have very little sense of smell
And, of course, being as nasty as she is, she always has to get the last word
“That may be true , but you better go take a shower, you really smell like hell!”
