Even if you try to help them,
As I have around here with my neighbor,
They run away, and can only be caught in a trap,
Then the local SPCA basically just euthanizes them.”

The best way for anyone to help feral cats
Is to utilize TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Return)
It’s the only way to curtail increasing numbers
And, for many more TNR volunteers, we yearn
What many groups like Alley Cat Allies advocate, today
Is trapping them, and taking them to Spay/Neuter facilities
Where they are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and tagged
And then returned to their feral colonies, where they live free
I, myself, have several humane live-traps, made for feral felines
I trap them, and I take them to a nearby spay/neuter animal clinic
They only charge me about $30.00 for every feral that I bring there
So this extremely humane endeavor is not very costly at all to finish
Most adult feral felines are already too wild, to make into house pets
So the worst thing one can do is trap them, and take them to a shelter
Where no one is willing to adopt them, or bring them into their homes
So, most shelters don’t even try, they just quickly euthanize their ferals
(Feral Kittens, if socialized early enough, however, can become pets,
Most of the feral kittens I’ve brought into my home are quite content).
Those of us who participate in TNR, also build feral feline winter shelters
In which they can survive in their own colonies, through harsh winter days
Unless many people start helping these unwanted and unloved feral felines
America will never be able reduce their numbers or their suffering in any way

Also, last night on '60 Minutes' Scott Pelley did a piece on an event held in San Diego every year that works on helping homeless vets.
Little things here and there make a big difference.

My daughter and her husband did exactly that
to a female with kittens, they trapped her
took her in until she recovered and released her
they keep field mice away........
