-A Very Sad Follow-Up to Nature’s Lament-

We humans are extremely arrogant, and self-serving
We even try to blame the Earth’s animals, these days
For our self-inflicted, rapidly declining, natural world
The Attack on Unimak, highlights this in so many ways
Unimak is a remote island in the Aleutians in Alaska
Only about 60 hardy souls, permanently reside there
Most of the island is a designated ‘Wildlife Sanctuary’
Designed to protect remaining wolves and brown bears
But, alas, this tiny island is also home to some caribou
Who, like most wild animals today, are on the decline
Unfortunately, for the 25-30 wolves that still exist there
Caribou are part of their natural diet, on which they dine
Officials in Alaska want our government to look the other way
While they shoot down these remaining wolves, from the skies
You see, Trophy Hunters pay huge amounts, to hunt its caribou
And blaming wolves for our vanishing caribou, is just another lie
Between the years 2001 and 2008, hunters killed lots of these caribou
Not to eat them, but to boast of Trophy Caribou Heads, for their walls
“But Hell, Mr. Secretary, Head of the Bureau Designed to Protect Them,
We All Know That These Damned Old Wolves Are to Blame, After All.”
I, myself, have visited these remote Aleutian islands
Not many Americans, would even want to live there
Yet, in our modern day arrogance and self-importance
We begrudge them, to the last remaining wolf and bear
And very sadly, unless many Americans now start protesting these atrocities
And, start demanding, that we as a nation, start protecting endangered species
Our now rapidly diminishing wildlife, like wolves, and bears, and mountain lions
Will soon all be gone from North America, and will soon all sadly be, just a memory
These days, we even refuse to give wildlife some sanctuary, on a remote island;
So I sadly see little hope for the future of our natural world, in the hands of man.
The Department of the Interior, which is charged with managing and protecting this island refuge for the continued preservation of our rapidly dwindling American wildlife, is already considering allowing this atrocious Unimak wolf massacre to go forward, as planned.
And Aerial Killing (which was federally banned many years ago, and which state officials in Alaska still routinely utilize) is as inhumane, as it is unnecessary. Wolves are gunned down from the sky, or chased by helicopter to sheer exhaustion. In some cases, wounded wolves escape, only to experience slow, agonizing deaths. And since state officials plan to massacre these wolves during their pup-rearing season, any wolf pups on the island will be orphaned and left to die when their mothers are mercilessly shot down.
Crying Wolf, Instead of Accepting Blame,
And, Our Now Insatiable Human Greed,
Very Sadly Are, The Very Real Threats,
To Our Vanishing Natural World, Today.

Not many Americans, would even want to live there
Yet, in our modern day arrogance and self-importance

"I wish WE could do something to stop this. This is the legacy put in motion by the likes of that Palin, the Gov. of Idaho and others and what I have become so embittered to now call "the Clovis" trash that has reincarnated to do its continued killing without reason or restraint. And this is the ultimate corruption, that in a remote place like this where there is no reason for man to intervene these type of people feel that this trash government is giving them to green light to continue their immoral killing spree.
And the pups are personally being targeted while most Americans think apparently that this is just fine.
As an old Indian Spirit that I feel I am, I am disillusioned once again with White Man's values; it will only worsen in the next election cylce.
The Native American people's would never have treated God and His Creatures like this. There is no positive here, unless and until this killing against the Buffalo and the Wolf stop; but there is long history here going back to when and how he wiped out the Indians and their wildlife... I do not think he will repent of this in his heart in time.
IF there is a spiritually perfected "Earth" someday, a "peaceable kingdom" - I hope this creature and all the silent supporters of these tactics, have no place in it!
I feel deeply for the abandoned wolf pups the most, left to die or even worse inhumanely slaughtered...

I was so absorbed in the information, it took me several verses to appreciate the rhyme. You pulled me right in to this cause. Definitely one of your many gifts.

Day after day, I send petitions, to stop the skinners and hunters and factory farmers and and and, and all I get back is excuses written by some smart beaurocrat or white coated University proffessor, in red ink, or maybe even blood. My poetry even has been tinged now for some time by this osmosis of misery, I was thinking of quiting. God bless you for your efforts to bring awareness to the decent souls that are left to maybe bring light to this darkness.
