“Hope is the thing with feathers,

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without words,

That never stops at all.”

Emily Dickinson

It had been over two days now

Of almost non-stop moving snow

When I paused, and I saw him there

His red on white image, moved me so

Here, was a red beacon of feathered hope

Amidst, a never-ending, avalanche of white

Here, was a tiny, sage, representative of nature

Now singing out, assuring me that it would be alright

I stood there, mesmerized by his image and song

I called to my spouse, and she now marveled, too

We both smiled now, and we took a needed break

We both realized, that soon, Spring would rise anew

As I now thought about this tiny, singing, red beacon of hope in a tree

I quickly realized that my greatest teachers in life are birds and animals

This one had made me realize, that all this snow, would eventually melt

And, as I pictured Spring blossoms surrounding him, I marveled at it all

It had been over two days now,

Of almost non-stop moving snow;

When I paused, and I saw him there,

His red on white image, moved me so.

Very nicely done. I to believe animals are the ones that teach in life, especially birds whom I have grown up listening to and marveling.

I'd make them lazy dogs of yours help melt the snow away, and colorize it at the same time. Patrick

Lucky you, Ed! And a beautiful beacon of hope you saw....can't see anything here in Atlantic Canada...we're buried under 8 feet of snow! There's so much snow on our roof (at least five feet) it's beginning to get scary! Can't wait for Spring!!!!

"And, as I pictured Spring blossoms surrounding him, I marveled at it all" - well no snow here, but just the same the horrendous freezes have left my Florida's wild woods looking "sick" and me wondering if it will ever look like the flowery beautiful summer of 2009 again (see pics on my FB page)So much killed...but I do look forward to seeing those migrating songbirds pass through here in march and just hope with my hearing loss, I HEAR THEM!

This one makes me smile Ed! I love stopping in my snow tracks too...to admire any flash of color.

Beacon, messenger of Spring,
small red on an ocean of white -
terrific scene and poem, Ed,
full of love and promise.

Ed, Nice write. Love the photo too. Just think of all the benefits of that snow. First, it creates beautiful scenes for your mind to appreciate. Then, it give you all that healthy exercise. Then those two benefits combine to give you the material for an excellent poem and finally, when it all melts in the spring, it feeds the flowers and the animals creating more beauty and maybe more importantly more food for all.

Of course, those of us living down here in Florida, somehow muddle through without it.

Thanks Dick
