There are Many Animal Ghost Stories,

And This is One of Mine

I guess it must have been around 3 AM

I was heading south through Wisconsin

I always travel down old country roads

Places where history and legends begin

The full moon was shining up in the sky

There wasn’t one other living soul in sight

As my old truck crested a large wooded hill

I saw him standing out there in the moonlight

I hit the brakes as hard as I could and I just stared

This eerie, moonlit creature was looking right at me

I soon got out of my truck and I peered into his eyes

Neither this old horse nor I seemed too inclined to flee

Eventually, he began walking down that steep forested hill

And I soon followed, there was just something in his look

Within a few short minutes, he led me to an old gravesite

A very secluded grassy area, next to a muddy little brook

That’s when I spotted a very old wooden grave marker

So very sadly inscribed, by a young girl named Jennifer

This eerie, spirited horse, now seemed to be a bit happier

As he suddenly took off, racing away into the trees in a blur

I suddenly understood why he had wanted me to see his grave

He had wanted someone to know how much he had been loved

By a very sweet girl named Jennifer sometime in the distant past

Now, I felt extremely fortunate, as if this were a gift from Above

I once had a brief visit from my beloved deceased grandmother

And I believe I saw my father’s spirit, that sad night that he died

I even think I saw old Geronimo’s ghost in the Arizona mountains

But with each new apparition, I never feel uneasy, or question why

I truly believe that there are many things that we will never understand

And that both life and death, hold many extremely intriguing mysteries

As I eventually got back in my truck and I drove off that moonlit night

Knowing this horse had been loved, was a marvelous experience for me

Ed, you are so close to nature and live so naturally and always looking out for the lost, dumped and mistreated animal, it is not a surprise you would be gifted with such sights. Gotta love it. Liz

Absolutely love this, Ed,
the mystery, the delve into the unknown;
i never dismiss what i don't understand, just say
to myself, 'you don't know, but that doesn't
deny it'
i admit in my time to a few 'encounters'
similar to what you've so well described and shared.

One thing I have learned in this life is always to keep an open mind, just because someone can not prove something does not mean it does not exist...great story.

OOOOooo... the mystery in this goes right through me, Dad, and I, too, have seen, felt and heard things at such "sacred" spots that have added to or increased my intelligence of what actually took place there. It so reminds me of a crossroads where a dog stayed day and night after his owner was killed in a car crash there... He has himself been gone many years now but the spot is still drenched in his presence. Love this kind of 'weenie offering. xx
