“To be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter;
To be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest,
Or a wildflower in spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.”
John Burroughs
The first day of Spring
I awake before the dawn
I get out of bed and I dress
Soon I’m standing on our lawn
Our resident robins are already quite busy
I observe them plucking worms in the grass
I hear the cardinals and the sparrows chirping
I toss some peanuts to the squirrels for breakfast
Specks of yellow sunlight now dot the horizon
Silently, two of our canines arrive at my side
Without a word, the three of us are on our way
Off to a tiny patch of wood, so glad to be alive
As the first dawn of spring slowly envelops us
It’s as if this forest has come to life, overnight
We are greeted by a wondrous display of color
All of the green and the purple fill me with delight
Suddenly, a feathered chorus begins a heavenly tune
The birds of the wood are ushering in Spring’s first day
My dogs and I marvel at the sights and sounds for awhile
I pick a few wildflowers for my wife, then we’re on our way
There was a time in my life when I had been much too busy
To marvel at the wonders of the day, or at this first day of Spring
So this morning I thank God for all these magnificent gifts of nature
For my loyal companions, and for all the joy, the simple life can bring
