I have been rescuing Pit Bulls from the cruel streets
Ever since those horrific days down in New Orleans
The vast majority of them have been marvelous dogs
Contrary to what many believe, no canine is born mean
Five years ago now, numerous abused Pit Bulls were finally rescued
From Michael Vick’s abysmal Bad Newz Kennels Dog Fighting Ring
And very recently, a reunion was organized with seven of the survivors
Which proves what a little love, and compassion, and kindness, can bring
Each of the seven dogs pictured above has made a truly remarkable recovery
All seven of these dogs have proudly earned ‘Canine Good Citizen Certificates’
Three of them serve as therapy dogs in hospitals and children’s literacy programs
As in so many cases today, we should be prosecuting vicious humans, not these Pits
These seven dogs are just some of the large number of horrendously abused canines rescued from Michael Vick’s Torture Chamber. Twenty-two of these dogs went to The Best Friends Animal Society and their Dogtown Sanctuary in Utah. (A marvelous place that I have visited, and volunteered at, many times.) Their dogs, which the organization now calls The Vicktory Dogs, have also been making dramatic improvements as well. Several of them have also become therapy dogs, and many of them have become great family pets.
And in the last year alone, our local Muttley Crew Pet Rescue Group has rescued several abandoned and abused Pit Bulls from the mean city streets. Among them - Handsome Hank, the starving, terrified, dumpster diving Pit Bull; Shadow, the frightened feral little Pit Bull Mix so cruelly abandoned as a puppy; and Highway, the abandoned and abused Pit Bull dumped on an interstate, hit by a car, and left for dead. And today, all of these dogs are now wonderful, gentle, loving, family pet members. All they needed, was love.
