A Winter's Walk At Dawn

“The happiest man,

Is he who learns from nature,

The lesson of worship.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

A winter’s walk at dawn

Not one other soul around

Wandering out in the wood

Blissful serenity I soon found

Soft sparkling snow, underneath my feet

Gurgling water, rushing past me in a creek

A much needed break, from life’s ordeals

I had found another haven, that I did seek

A red-tailed hawk soon soars overhead

A young deer saunters down for a drink

A very curious rabbit peers from the trees

I am truly not as alone as some might think

But these winged, and hoofed, and furred creatures

Do not attempt to bother me, or disturb my serenity

They watch me, and I observe them, for quite awhile

Then I journey on, my heart again now filled with glee

Here, in this vibrant undisturbed forest realm

Gloriously unmolested for countless centuries

On soil, where ancient peoples once wandered

Viewing the same majestic wonders I now did see

A solitary and serene sojourn, through our natural world

Always manages to soothe my world-weary heart and soul

And on each and every journey into Earth’s unmolested places

I am awed by splendors that are ancient, magnificent, and bold

A brisk winter’s walk at dawn,

Not another human soul around;

Wandering alone here in this wood,

Such blissful serenity, I quickly found.

Mr. Ed,
I am awed also of the splendor and blissful serenity
of a brisk winter's walk at dawn with a wonderful sojourn.

I envy you these times, Dad. It's not that I don't thoroughly enjoy them myself... I do but not at DAWN, especially at this freezing time of the year. Hibernation is more my style but have to admit to missing most of what you therefore revel in. Early mornings are special and are mostly what is lost to so many. Blessed are the eyes that see and the heart that thus knows worship... May it so continue throughout the coming year. xx

This much ignored splendorous environment is indeed worthy of all the acknowledgment and respect we can give her.

I live my life in nature as much
as possible, yesterday a beautiful
Ferruginous Hawk one of the largest
I have seen here so far, sat in my
tree looking straight at me... he was
beautiful... the turkeys scattered quickly
he could have easily carried one off... I was
not quick enough to snap a picture as I was
too captured by his beauty...

Hawk is akin to Mercury, the messenger of the gods. Hawk medicine teaches you to be observant, to look at your surroundings. Observe the obvious in everything that you do. Life is sending you signals.

Life is the initiation. If you have pulled the Hawk card, then right now a clue about the magic of life is being brought to you. This message can imbue you with the power to overcome a currently stressful or difficult situation. The test is your ability to observe the nuances of power lurking nearby. Pay attention! You are as powerful as your capacity to perceive, receive, and use your abilities.

What is called for here is an intuitive ability to discern the message carried within the cry of Hawk. The shrillness of Hawk’s call pierces the state of unawareness, and asks you to seek the truth.

The ancients recognized this magnificent bird of prey as a messenger bringing tidings to their Earth Walk, the Good Red Road, from the world of the grandmothers and grandfathers who lived before them. If Hawk were to magically call out, it was a sign to beware or be aware. This could mark the coming of a warring tribe, the birth of a child, or the celebration of counting coup. Hawk’s cry signalled the need for the beholder to heighten awareness and receive a message.

Hawk medicine is a totem that is filled with responsibility, because Hawk people see the overall view. Hawk is not like Mouse, who sees everything through a magnifying glass. Hawk medicine people are aware of omens, messages from Spirit, and the color of the calling card you gave them three months ago. No detail slips by them unnoticed.

For Hawk to be here now, you are to be aware of signals in your life, so notice and receive them. Hawk may be teaching you to grab an opportuinty which is coming your way. On the other hand, Hawk may be bringing you the message that you should circle over your life, and examine it from a higher perspective. From this vantage point you are better able to discern the hazards which bar you from freedom of flight. Remember: Hawk has a keen eye and a bold heart, for Hawk flies close to the Light of Grandfather Sun.”
