“Let every man

Praise the bridge

That carries him over.”

An Old English Proverb

Music: Magic Travels

We were now traveling towards home

On an extremely peaceful country lane

There were not any other souls around

On this January day, filled with icy rain

I always travel down the serene back roads

You can have your modern, super highways

They only offer tons of traffic and billboards

Our land’s grandeur, is found on rural byways

And suddenly, there it was, now directly in front of us

This old covered wooden bridge, so elegantly grand

Built sometime, way back, in the nineteenth century

By very hardy souls, who lived and toiled on this land

Most of America’s extremely quaint old covered bridges

Were constructed of wood, so very plentiful at the time

I soon stopped my truck beside this wondrous old bridge

Savoring its fine workmanship, now feeling quite sublime

Here was a place my dogs and I now lingered for awhile

Now taking in a magnificent piece of American history

Too many of these historic old bridges, are now gone

But the ones that still remain, always emanate serenity

They remind me of a time, which now seems so long ago

When we revered the simple things in life, and nature, too

Standing over an old rolling river, on an old covered bridge

Always helps me to somehow alleviate my modern day blues

Sights like this convince me that I was born in the wrong century

How I would have truly loved to help build a bridge such as this

These days, all I can do, is wander the back roads of America

In search of vanishing treasures, which still provide a little bliss

I live in New Brunswick, Canada, the province of covered bridges! And they are beautiful! The provincial government keeps most of them in good repair, so we get to enjoy travelling over them as often as we can. Lovely peaceful setting you describe, Ed. I, too, would rather take the back roads and enjoy nature.

Thank you for this elegant piece of poetry Ed. I love old bridges as well. I am very blessed to live by a covered bridge just 2 blocks away from my home on Indian Creek. We have to let down the cover of our boat when we pass under her. We don't mind at all because it's so graceful and quaint to look at. The main reason bridges were covered back then because wooden bridges lasted much longer if the were covered from the sun, snow and rain. I am sure folks appreciated having a place to get temporary shelter as well. I often walk or bike ride over our bridge. It's a great landmark in our community.

Peace be with you my friend,

John Michael

Ah, me thinks you were born in the right century. Otherwise you would be out there trying to save Indians instead of dogs, and probably got shot trying to do it. Because you were born in the twentieth century you are able to travel widely and see all the sights––new and old––that this great country, and others, offers. And you do your good work as far away as New Orleans.

I have never seen a wooden covered bridge except in pictures and in the movies. However, from my fishing days I spent many a time under and around bridges because the winter ice always dug deep holes where the best fish were in the shade of the bridge. The other sites that I've seen include the ferries that I have been privileged to cross rivers in. Those family-run ferries have been disappearing from the landscape like family farms.

"Sights like this convince me that I was born in the wrong century"...

An emphatic NO to the above, u were NOT born in the wrong century, u were born to take care of animals in this century & let the rest of us know what its like to be truly human...e

There is nothing more serene and wonderful
than to travel the backgrounds... I prefer them
over anything...
I do not care for the highways... You miss everything...
I am never in a hurry, and prefer to enjoy nature...
I envy what a beautiful journey you have taken us on here...
Back in time with the visions neatly in place...
But remember, we have been there in those times and before...
It's why we wish to return to a simpler time of the beauty we
so long for...

Thank you

I can hear my own inner voice saying exactly that, over so many things. I would have been much better suited the bygone days. It is reflected in my values and my preferences, even my writing.

A wonderful ode to a bygone era.

Ed, I really love those old covered bridges...they remind us of a time when time was just a number on the clock. Well done!

Mr. Ed,
A beautiful written glimpse of the past that was built by
strength and determination of men in their era.
There are several covered bridges in our area. Love to
see and walk or drive across each one. A sense of peace
that brings you to another time if only just for a moment.
Your delightful journey with your dogs and this covered
bridge is splendid.

Now Ed, I know these beautiful spots turn you on, but you keep writing about them as well as you do, you might entice more people to go there, and the super highways wiil be empty and your almost private road be blocked ha, bless ya.
