“Night, the beloved.

Night, when words fade,

And the sounds come alive.”

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Music: Magic Travels

I awoke in the night

To a most familiar call

A mesmerizing train whistle

One of my favorite calls of all

And very soon, it began unleashing

Memories, spanning my entire life

Of wondrous train trips with family

Of romantic train treks with my wife

Suddenly, I was six-years old again

Riding a train, from Chicago to L.A.

I fell in love with America’s railways

And I still love riding any train, today

Then, I envisioned an old train in Europe

When I shared a sleeper car with a family

They were farmers, heading to Switzerland

And they so freely shared their food with me

And suddenly, I was aboard an old steam train

My wife and I were on vacation, in New Mexico

Now, I began hearing the whistle of this locomotive

As it began chugging up the mountain to old Antonito

Then, as I closed my eyes again, listening to this night call

I was now magically transported up to Alaska’s Denali Park

Friends and I were heading to snow-covered Mt. McKinley

And now, I could even hear those wolves, howling in the dark

I awoke in the night,

To a most familiar call;

A mesmerizing train whistle,

One of my favorite calls of all.

And now, it has been imbedded in my mind,

This latest night call, now a part of my soul;

And as I eventually drifted back off to sleep,

On another wondrous train ride, I would go.

When I hear that lonely whistle blow, it makes me feel forlorn. For I can't go where it will go before it reaches morn. My sadness waits beside the tracks, for its mournful return.

Mr. Ed,
The love of trains has a special place in my memories.
Santa coming to town on the train. Waving to my Uncle
as he was an engineer in the 60's.

There is something magical about the sound of a train especially in the middle of the night...I hear it only 100 yards from my window and I hear it in my memories of travelling all over the country...thanks for reminding me, again.
Cheers,
Dan

Awesome! Great imagery...I love trains too...although my first train ride was on the old Newfie Bullet when I was fourteen...google that train and you're in for a great story...giggle...

Right off you used a quote from one of my favorite authors... :)

Ah and such a wondrous night call...
I remember as a child the whistle of an
approaching train... It gave me vivid thoughts
of hobos hitching a ride and the old west...
It gave me visions of a train traveling through
the beauty of the Colorado Rockies or spanning across
vast deserts and train robbers galloping along on their
trying to catch up with the train and rob it.

But the beauty one sees while travelling the rails is the
most wonderful thing on earth!

Thank you for taking me back into this world Mr. Ed

Love and Light
Lily
