She was now a creature of the dark night
So sadly prowling the back alleys of the city
She had been abused, and then abandoned
In a vast concrete jungle, with far too little pity
She was forced to scavenge for garbage
If she hoped to survive yet one more day
She had to fight the feral felines for food
In her world, there was never time to play
Animal Control managed to trap her one night
They took her to an extremely frightening place
She was imprisoned in a dark dingy back room
With dozens more of her defiant lone wolf race
This is where I found this abandoned creature
When I roamed through the shelter’s inner core
Her two eyes were dark and extremely morose
She instinctively knew she was at death’s door
She had struck back, and bitten their veterinarian
Now, she was scheduled to be callously put down
Just another statistic, in a world, not of her making
Now, there was very little hope for her to be found
As I gazed upon this forlorn, yet defiant being
I remembered that I’d once been a lone wolf, too
But another being had given me a second chance
And this being’s compassion had been my renewal
So I took this lone wolf home that afternoon
Hoping I could somehow turn her life around
She was extremely wary and distrusting at first
Love was sadly, something she had never found
One day as she struggled against her confining leash
She broke it off and was now again suddenly free
The last I saw of this still defiant little lone wolf
Was her tail, as she rushed off through the trees
I soon sat down in a deep dark barren field
Extremely saddened, that she had now fled
But minutes later, she once again reappeared
And now, very affectionately nuzzled my head
She had decided that her lone wolf days were at an end
She instinctively knew that love had now ended her strife
And suddenly, I knew deep within my own heart and soul
That for me, this tiny creature would now give her very life
I sincerely believe that any embittered being of any species
Given a compassionate chance, can learn to trust, and to love
And every night, as this now trusting dog falls asleep next to me
For second chances in our lives, I sincerely thank the Lord above
There are many abandoned beings just like her, at a shelter near you;
Please consider giving one a second chance, before their life is through.
