“There was about him,

A lurking ferocity,

As though the wild

Still lingered in him;

And the wolf in him,

Merely slept.”

Jack London

This January’s Full Moon

By many Native Americans

Was called the ‘Wolf Moon’

And recently, it arrived again

These very sad days, I now find myself

Howling up, at this ancient Wolf Moon

My dogs, of course, always accompany me

And they too, now sing a very sad, soulful, tune

I’ve been truly blessed to have seen and heard many wolves

On my many treks, into the wilds of the American continent

There is nothing quite like, gazing up into a star-studded night

Listening to the wolves howling at the moon, right outside a tent

I guess that I have always identified myself with the wolf

Because to me, this ancient creature represents Earth’s wild

And as we human beings continue on our path of destruction

I so sadly find it so much harder these days to laugh and smile

We seem hell-bent, on destroying all of its remaining Creation

And, the beings which now suffer the most, are these wild ones

I would love to leave this Earth a better place than when I arrived

But I don’t see much hope of that, before my time on Earth is done

The last several decades have been extremely horrendous

For all wild things, and for the environment, on this planet

I sincerely hope and pray that our leaders, and every one of us

Soon wake up and realize we’re taking Nature’s gifts for granted

Up in Alaska, one of the wild wolf’s last refuges in America

They are now being shot down from helicopters and airplanes

And today, they are also being gunned down, at Yellowstone

And across the Rocky Mountains, in a greedy world gone insane

“We have very sadly forgotten

How to be good guests,

And how to walk lightly on this earth,

As its many other creatures do.”

Barbara Ward

Rest assured that when you leave this earth that you made an enormous dent to end the unnecessary suffering of hundreds, perhaps thousands of our fellow creatures. Still I know the problem lies in the millions. cuz p

It's a sad commentary on human values that we fear the wolf and value mammon.

I agree you Ed. I sadly agree... The American Indian revered wolves and so much so that they would name their children after them. The American Indian respected nature and only took from her what was needed to live. It is ironic because in reality they were more civilized than most of us are today. We can learn much from our ancestors, the great American Indians. However sadly, we destroyed much of their culture just as we are destroying the animals that they once held so dear.

Peace be with you,

John Michael

Bravo. Your poem brought chills to my spine and tears to my eyes as your words mingled with my sentiments. It is a tragedy what man has done to the beauty of nature.

I run with the wolves from time to time. And I am saddened by their plight and as you so aptly said the plight of our earth under our control. But control is slipping as we continue to destroy and destroy. Heartbreaking poem. touched my soul XO Liz

Not enough of this species crying to the moon for spiritual guidance, and to be heard by the world of atrocities committed agains Mother Nature.
The boastful cowards that hunt this most beautiful creature with a gun, from ground or helicopter, can only brag about their shallow thrills, should they be send to the wild, with only their claws and teeth to defend themselves, they would surely succumb to their cowardness, and seek the nearest shelter among their kind. They should mount their trophies with the inscription, for willy nilly thrill I was killed, though my courage and life was of Mother Nature, not of my demented brain.

Not only have you been very blessed Mr. Ed...
every creature that has crossed your path is very blessed...
for you are their angel and help...

Aye many a man are parasites on this planet... I for one and
I do know many others are not... I am a vegan, some tease me
about causing plants to scream...

Bless you...

It is a sad fact that 'Man' is indeed the parasite on this planet. There has always been a 'kill for food' cycle, but the crucial balance that kept this sustainable is long gone.
How long will it be before we are all cannibals?
