I was driving to the lake at dawn yesterday

When I saw a meadow filled with Lupine

I stopped my truck and I eagerly got out

To me, this lovely spring flower is divine

Lupines bloom in a variety of vibrant colors

But my favorite kind, are the tall purple ones

They delightfully brighten northern landscapes

When they bloom, I know that Spring has begun

Their name ‘Lupine’ derives from my friend, the Wolf

Like ‘Canis Lupus’ these Lupine Flowers are born free

If unmolested by man, they roam meadows and forests

And, spotting them every Spring, brings great joy to me

Native Americans revered this ancient spring wildflower

And a wide variety of birds, butterflies, and bugs, do too

This particular morning, a red-winged blackbird was here

Taking in their wondrous beauty and singing his spring tune

I believe that John Burroughs was right about the simple life

And until I die, I know that Nature will continue to inspire me

I can't think of a better way to spend a gorgeous spring morning

Than with Lupine, while listening to the joyous song of a Redwing
