A Very Devilish Birthday Today

Today marks the ancient birthday celebration

Of one of the most illustrious members of A.D.

And although he says that he is only in his late-50s

Some of us know he has really lived for many centuries

He does not like a lot of publicity

He frowns at having his picture taken

He likes to whine, and to complain a lot

And when he walks, the ground is shaken

He lives in a secluded old motor home park in New Jersey

Somewhere in the vicinity of extremely quaint old Landisville

But at night, he often wanders wild through the Pine Barrens

Anyone catching a glimpse of him there, will surely get a thrill

You see, during the sunny daylight hours

He wears a most devilish clothing disguise

But at night – oh, at night - he runs naked

Through the deep dark Barrens with a smile

So please join me and his old Cousin Cur from Bawlmer

In giving A.D.s Ed Matlack, a Very Hardy Birthday Salute

And maybe – just maybe – if you dare wander those Barrens

You might catch this very old rascal, in his hairy Birthday Suit

Happy, Happy Birthday, Bro,

You Hairy Old Devil, You!

The Legend of the Jersey Devil

Emitting shrill, uninhibited, extremely ancient cries (and burps and farts), and leaving his gigantic hairy footprints on mud, snow, and creek banks, it is said that The Jersey Devil has roamed the eerie Pine Barrens of South Jersey for at least 300 years.

He is said to resemble a composite of several different animals, but numerous eye witnesses claim that he walks upright, and he has even been spotted smoking some sort of ancient wild weed.

And although he is often associated with witchcraft and devil worship, some actually believe that The Jersey Devil is really an ancient guardian of both the pine forest and the eastern seashore.

And please be on the lookout for my exciting new ‘Jersey Devil’ comic book series, which will be hitting bookstores and grocery store checkout stands very soon.

Given I'm listening to Nina Rota's soundtracks for my hero, Fellini, you depicted a devil I'd like to meet, given the illustrative description of his existence in this bit of swirling imaginative wordsmithing.

"You might catch this very old rascal, in his hairy Birthday Suit"...
Yes old brother of mine, that line got me, I cried tears of laughter with that shot, you made me very happy with this poem, as on my special day here in the Barrens, its raining so I can't go to my special ocean spot and get in a swim...you know how Ma likes me to take a swim to clean off the barrens mud at least on my birthday...ah well another day will I get my washing swim...and as for you and the Cur, you'd better NOT visit me in my barrens at night, as I find it hard to see in my OLD age and I might find two old farts drunk on whiskey kind of tasty...Thanks, Ed.....................e
