-National Mutt Day is December 2nd-

“In every heart there is a hole,

And in every shelter, there is love to fill it.”

            Colleen Paige,

Creator of National Mutt Day

Most of my rescued canines

Are marvelous mixed breeds

Dogs do not need AKC papers

To bring love and happiness to me

Sadly, the majority of canines that are euthanized

In our animal shelters, are unwanted, mixed breeds

Far too many people, still do not spay and neuter pets

Far too many people, still insist on purchasing pedigrees

Yet, mixed breed dogs are usually healthier than the pure breds

They are generally better behaved, and they will often live longer

They’re just as capable as pure bred dogs, and perform many tasks

Such as guide dogs for the handicapped, and patrolling our borders

Millions of unwanted and unloved mixed breed dogs, wait in shelters

For someone to come adopt them, and make them a part of their family

Please consider fostering or adopting a Mutt, and saving a deserving life

The majority of dogs that I have had the privilege to know, had no pedigree

(And They Have Always Given Their All, To Me)

What's interesting about your analogy here is its application to humans. There's something about the elite status of our species that seems more prone to disease of the heart and mind, than say the mixtures of ethnicity and religion relationships. My personal opinion is that the hard knocks that come with these comparisons are what makes for a more realistic expectation of life. In watching the best in show the other night I was struck by this very thought.

I've only known pure bred dogs in later life. I think I preferred the resilience of the former.

I can't understand the audacity of creating mixed breed dogs like the LapaZoodle (I just made that name up, like they do creating these monstrosities). What we have become scares me sometimes.

With so many of these sad souls out there, every day needs to be 'National Mutt Day'.
It's high time all the breeders and puppy farms were brought to heel.

Nice write, Ed.
