I received yet another extremely sad telephone call
About another homeless dog, out by the county jail
They said that she had been living here, over a year
“Do you think you could come out with a trap today?”

I soon found myself on the snowy county jail grounds
The temperature had dropped, wind chill below zero
I was now searching for a place to set up my dog trap
By following this homeless dog’s paw prints in the snow

After I set and baited my trap, I retreated to my car
And it wasn’t long, before I saw a head in the snow
But this was not a homeless dog, it was a hungry cat
Who was now staring at me, meowing out his ‘Hello’

I soon got out of my car, as he approached my dog trap
I could see that he was now both shivering and starving
After I gave him something to eat, he hopped into my car
And he was soon on the way to the animal hospital with me

Very sadly, this starving, freezing feline had no microchip
But he was very friendly, so I knew he was once a house pet
He had several bad teeth, which had to be surgically removed
So now this now homeless feline had to remain there at the vet’s

I went to pick him up yesterday; he greeted me with happy purrs
He now has a home for the Holidays; I named him ‘Jailhouse Joe’
And as Joe now joyously naps in the warmth of a home once more
I again head out to search for the homeless dog’s tracks in the snow

There are very sadly millions of homeless felines, all across our nation today
Contrary to popular belief, many of them do not know how to hunt, to survive
When abandoned cats like Joe are taken to shelters, they are often euthanized
Please consider adopting one this Holiday Season; all of us can help save lives
