“Hold fast to dreams,
For when dreams go,
Life is a barren landscape,
Frozen with snow.”
Langston Hughes
I’m already out and about this frigid dawn
I eventually stop to gaze at the frozen lake
Most people, still snug and warm indoors
On this sub-zero morning, still not awake
As I stand here, gazing out at all of the ice
I recall many a pleasant stroll here, in spring
This is one sub-zero winter, I wish would end
Far too much suffering, this one continues to bring
Homeless people, hovering under blankets in alleys
Homeless dogs, some barely alive, out on the streets
I was on my way to try and rescue a dog at a cemetery
In the bushes, in Forty Below, this forgotten orphan sleeps
My dreams, this cruel Forty Below Winter, also seem to be frozen now
I’ve been dreaming about that frozen, lifeless, dog, on the railroad tracks
That’s when I get a call prohibiting me from entering the gated cemetery
“We don’t care about some damned dog! And you had better not trespass.”
-Life right now truly is a barren, frozen, extremely cruel and apathetic landscape-

What a callous, stupid attitude. I'd sic animal control on him for bad behavior! Better yet, call the chairman of the cemetery board and report the bastard. If that gets no results, call up the local TV station hungry for more winter horror stories, and clue a reporter in.
