Music: Nature’s Lament


Back when I was a young child
I used to see butterflies all around
These sad days, wherever I wander
Not very many butterflies can be found

The butterfly in the photograph is a Monarch
Once plentiful, they are now in severe decline
Today, as I wander northern lakes and forests
I now rarely spot this marvelous butterfly divine

And, like our now vanishing honey bees
Earth’s beautiful butterflies are pollinators
They play a key role in plant reproduction
Transporting pollen, from flower to flower

And, like most of our other wildlife today
Butterflies are suffering from our pollution
From habitat loss, and from climate change
And, we are at a loss, for a butterfly solution

Earth’s butterflies need savannas and prairies
The Monarchs need milkweed and grasslands
Today, we turn these things into subdivisions
And industrial parks, which destroy their land

In the United States alone, twenty-three species
Of butterflies are now Endangered or Threatened
And, like our honeybees, bats, and other life forms
We are now witnessing, what could soon be, their end
