On Frozen Pond

Poem Artwork
-->“Winter’s icy breath is clouding the pond,
Frosting the pane, obscuring spring’s memory.”

John Geddes

On a trip to visit my mother at the cemetery
On a bitterly frigid, below zero, bone-chilling day
I also stop to visit the geese out on the frozen pond
They looked as cold, and as sad, as I was yesterday

It has been yet another bitterly cold, cold, winter season
They, like I, now seemed to yearn, for the arrival of spring
But sitting out here with them, I eventually begin to realize
They inspire me, to be content, to accept what life will bring

But I am now yearning for the very first signs of a new season
Like the lovely crocus, soon to be peeking up out of the snow
I’m also yearning to once again visit the marshes and wetlands
To observe our planet’s wondrous migrating birds, that I love so

February 2015, Mr. Ed

I enjoyed the poem. It took me back to when I lived in Vermont many years ago. The end of winter was always welcomed by the coming of spring!....M

Yes, nothing more desolatory than seeing geese skiing and crash-landing on frozen water. But, as you say, their resilience is inspiring and uplifting. Quite the opposite over here this winter. Barely more than two nights with sub-zero temperatures. Our stock seems pretty fat and could do with a post-Christmas exercise programme! :) xx

the main migratory route in the US believe it ore not passes through The Bronx ... always a joy to witness the variety of birds passing through in the spring and fall ... but i have to say those damn Canadian geese are a pain in the ass and have brought down a few jets around here ...

The frozen pond protests loudest! Hope spring will arrive soon.

The pond's frozen over,
for the honking geese,
who seem to be asking,
will this winter ever cease.

Whatever happened to the birds flying south for the winter...? -e-

~Mr. Ed~
The piano music flows so lovely as the first new blossoms of spring.
To life's wondering seasons to bring moments endearing of your
beautiful poem. To my Mother's visits...a voice of the seasons!

It's amazing that geese will stay in northern climes when they can migrate further south. I wonder if all those geese are sticking around my brother's home on the St. Joseph River in Bristol Indiana while he's in Arizona getting a little sun during this recent winter blast.

In 1971 I had to go to the Mayo Clinic for a workup on my spinal injury to see if something could be done. It was a clear, 20° below zero when I arrived at Rochester. To my surprise, I saw a flock of geese fly over and couldn't believe it. Later, I learned that the residents of Rochester routinely put out corn all winter long so many geese stay there even though there isn't any open water for miles.

I've also learned that that flock was the one that was saved back in the early part of the 20th century when Canada Geese were threatened by overhunting and Ducks Unlimited was started to prevent overhunting and bring all of the duck species back.
