Someone recently asked me
What kinds of dogs we rescue
I very sadly answered ‘All Kinds’
A fact that always makes me blue

Whether it’s a costly, purebred canine
Or a mutt – a mixture of different breeds
Pet rescuers now find them all, all of the time
Abandoned and starving out on our city streets

Whether it was purchased from a Puppy Mill
Or bought in a Pet Store, at a shopping mall
Or given as a Christmas gift to a boy or a girl
We pet rescuers now sadly encounter them all

Whether it is the tiniest of dogs – the Chihuahua
Or one of the biggest of canines – the Great Dane
All types of dogs, are now abandoned in America
All now wandering the streets, starving, and in pain

Whether it’s a pup, bred by a greedy backyard breeder
Or a faithful old dog, cruelly dumped out on the street
Whether it’s a dog left behind in an abandoned house
Sooner or later, virtually all kinds of dogs, we now meet

And these sad days for pets, rescuers often have to use traps
Because abandoned dogs of all kinds, of man, are now afraid
Whether pedigreed or mixed breed, whether tiny or gigantic
Man’s Best Friend, by our society today, has been betrayed
