Lesson Of The Butterfly

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The return trip back home today was outstanding. All along, the way through what could be best described, as wide spots in the road, were towns with names like Kline, Robertsville and Estille. It is by way of these back roads of the low country in which we travel. Their beauty today however was unparalleled. It is in these towns, that one can see tucked neatly between 300-year-old oaks covered with Spanish moss, 200 year old plus churches with long forgotten cemeteries in the background. Their ancient and leaning stones stood as if silent sentinels shrouded by the secret of time. It was along these roads that in my opinion could be best described as a miracle of atonement. For it was as if heaven itself blessed our way with one of its marvels. Words cannot begin to proclaim the simple beauty of this marvel…the yellow butterfly. There were simply thousands upon thousands of them, and all in pairs floating and fluttering on the warm autumn winds. This lasted for almost two hours down a 100-mile stretch, and just as suddenly, as they appeared…they disappeared. It was magic to behold, hence the following poem.

Lesson Of The Butterfly

Should we not regard the butterfly?

Which come autumn doth grace the sky.

Of such span, they last but a day

And with their season done, and in beauty's grace

They on sweet wings of glory fade softly away.

So why should not we, oh man, in all our pride,

Take to heart the lesson of the lowly butterfly.

For we oh prideful man, could do much to learn

If we were but to compare our seasons day

To that of the butterfly and his simple way,

Then it is by this that even we should attain

Our own grace to simply fly.

Just drove home ourselves, ole Rufuz and I, today the 18th, but we take the high speed roads, rather than the roads less traveled, as if we did we would NEVER make it home...too many places to stop and enjoy the beauty of Nature on them back roads, as well as too many places to stop and spend money...hope Leah is feeling better and your 'vaca' was a relaxing one...Ed & Rufuz

"Lesson Of The Butterfly" touches the heart of the wise and teaches
grace to all. It is a poetic flower scented with the aroma of creation.

I salute You, Poet!

Oh this is so fine and so true in essence that it humbles the reader into listening and thinking on the two images of life.
