Poem Artwork

Table For One

Lines of people snake down the sidewalk as the restaurant doors swing wide.

Couple after couple gives their names shouting table for two and then come inside.

The January winds stings as I move a few feet into the shadows and out the setting sun.

At last the doors to the foyer I reach and then I softly say…”A table for one”

The aroma of charbroiled steak and fried shrimp filled the air.

Hearts hung on red ribbon strings proclaiming valentines and love everywhere.

I stood and I stood waiting to ever so patiently to be given a seat.

“Table for one” played again and again in my head and not once did a voice to my soul greet.

Twenty minutes later a waitress showed me to a table long and wide.

So peculiar it felt to have such a big seat and not have anyone by my side.

So odd…so very odd it seems as I watched the other couples surrounded by red paper hearts and their secret dreams.

Oh a table for one…I started to just leave.

yet I stayed, I placed my order for a rib eye steak.

And then a song on the radio softly played.

Though this was Friday night…Cat Stevens sang…

“Another Saturday night and I aint got nobody”…..

A table for one even on a Friday night…oh what a shame.

I once read of a restaurant that didn't allow tables for one...I was astounded that they would do such a thing--could do such a thing. It still makes my mind turn...and makes me wonder if people in the town revolted. I would hope so.
Only once have I been to a restaurant alone. I don't know if there is anything that makes one feel so obtrusively alone.
My heart goes out to you...

there is sadness to this one for sure--but somehow--healing in going out

You have my understanding...and those red hearts everywhere...scream or cry?

Let's Hope Time will ease our pain a little...

You are in my prayers and thoughts Allen..

Hugs, Diana

A shame indeed. Sad to eat, live, sing, dance alone. Been there. Not anymore. Lucky me.
Hang in there.
Love,
Becca~

Keep writing, my friend, as as everyone here says, our thoughts and prayers continue.

prayers continue, only good thing about oneness is you CAN always find a table or whatever, it isn't easy, is it

Not easy it is, especially where you are coming from, I know! Or you could be like me, I NEVER stand in line for food, too many other places to eat in the world...it could be the best restaurant in Paris or New York & I will just as soon go to Wendy's or Arbys' as food is food, as far as I am concerned...still it is not easy anywhere to eat alone, I know this from experience...Ed

It's sad that on such occasion you're sitting alone; but I'm glad that at least you seemed to have had a great meal.

Loneliness is well-expressed in this piece.

A shame, indeed, Allen. I can't imagine, but you bring it to painful light: I'm so sorry. Know you continue to be (always) in my prayers.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :(
