Lost in the Mountains

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

When a daytrip goes awry; when we miss our turn in the dark rain of a mountain night; we stumble upon a blessing in the midst of our plight.

Lost in the Mountains

Hairpin turns, no guardrails in sight.
A 3000 foot drop into the blackness of night.
Miles upon miles; screeching tires, a screaming wife,
And then a valley with a cities light.

Starving and tired from our harrowing trial.
We found a steakhouse with nourishment
And a waitress with a sweet smile.

Her name is Kirstin and she spoke in almost a tone of hush.
Her wisdom was beyond her years
And the sweet softness of her voice gave these weary travelers a gentle touch.

Further as we spoke,
I felt the reason of her gentleness,
When she voiced her dreams;
Dreams filled of ailing children’s hearts;
Dreams of restoring family’s gripped by illness and torn apart.

Yes Kirstin is special and she truly touched our hearts.
We wish for this sweet lady,
All the best in her lifelong quest.

Kristin, you especially touched my heart with your love for children,
Where I once too, dreamed of working with them too.
I allowed my dreams to be crushed by hardships of life.
Please, Please, do not let your dreams die, as I let my candle burn out.

Jan ;~)

loved reading this--the waitress sounds like a great girl--I hope she joins the den and writes poetry :-)

It probably wasn't, but it reads like a day trip in West Virginia. Oh, how hard it was to get home some nights after driving deep into the mountains. One time, tired and worn out, we arrived in Elkins and ate at a steakhouse. I don't remember the waitress. Another time, on a long trip with a friend, we arrived in Cleveland at a little diner. I was so tired I stared at my coffee. The kind waitress asked me what was wrong. I wanted to ask her for a date, but we had to make my cousin's place near Dayton by midnight.

The only waitress I remember that I knew something about her children was when I stopped at the counter one day and was waited on by my mother. Her children had many illnesses and one of her sons, the one at the counter, was paralyzed.

You can't just eat at a restaurant, you have to psycho analyze your waitresses (sp?)...but a cute little story none the less...e
