Peggy Sue, oh Peggy Sue

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

Jan and I made the trek to her hometown in Georgia. I fully intended to stay at the hotel and watch TV. while she and her long time friend went out to supper and caught up on old times. Boy was I mistaken...Peggy Sue brought her husband Floyd and the 4 of us went out to eat. What happened that night took me back to my youth.
We ate, we talked not only to each other but too everyone there that night and to my surprise, not long after we finished supper, the floor was cleared for dancing. It had been so long and I felt it was just what was needed to get me out of my older than dirt funk I had been in forever it seemed. And it was Peggy Sue that I was teamed up with. Also my first time at line dancing with lots of help from the girls on the floor.

Peggy Sue, oh Peggy Sue

It happened by chance that lies upon the cosmic trail of life.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think a sleepy little town in deep Georgia would have so much life.

I thought of the coming night as I traveled to the hometown of my wife.
An old friend she was to in the soft hush of a quiet little town to meet.
Boring, oh boring, I thought this chitter chatter of old friends to be.
Yet to my surprise, Peggy Sue resurrected a forgotten part of me.

Not only was she easy on the eyes, but she could dance like a queen with the angels on high.
Thought it has been years since I danced with such joy, her energy and love for life raised my hope and gave unto me insight to which I still rejoice.

Therefore Peggy Sue…this ode of admiration is penned just for you.
Thus know that single night you and you alone took me on a magical flight.
You with your gentle smile and touch showed me the grace of a Southern Bell so much.

So thank you Peggy Sue, and be sure to thank Floyd for me too.
May grace and peace light your way,
And perhaps Jan and I will see you both another day…

Yes, Buddy Holly came to mind. Nice to hear a story behind the song!

A fine reverie on that point in the road where nostalgia meets newborn energies in a relentless quest for an endless vista of tomorrows that ring as true if not truer than yesterday... may you be blessed with the goodness and peace and power to thrive that makes life as meaningful as this memorable poem certainly is!

Glad to have you on my most-like-to-read list!

I was immediately reminded of the Buddy Holly song. Your friend was probably named because her mother and father love that song.

My dance partner just retired but she's still dancing professionally and hopes to get on America's Got Talent. Oh how I miss dancing… Especially with her.
