A Letter to My Dad…

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

While scanning through Jan’s FaceBook wall after work tonight, we came across a link to ‘5 Regrets of the Dying’ and just a short time later we happened across this Kenny Chesney video that I came to the conclusion that I have allowed work to consume my life and have put everything and everyone else on hold. I missed my grandchildren growing up, I missed many holidays with my family and I missed so much time with Leah and my mother, who are now both gone. And now my Dad is getting older and my Jan needs me more than she realizes. And where am I? Still at work… Will there ever come a day that I can finally sit back and enjoy quality time with those I love and not have to watch the clock and get to work… Will that day come???

To Dad from Allen,

I have spent my whole life working, while neglecting the more important issues of family. The attached video made me think of how little time I have been able to spend with those I have loved and those that I still love. The video brought tears to my eyes because it hit home.

Though Dad, you do not have this condition, nonetheless this is one of my regrets as shown below. I love you, Dad, and I want you to know how much I enjoy our telephone conversations.

I feel like I'm stuck in a hole at work. And the hole only gets deeper and I'm unable to climb out. I pray that some day...soon that this will change and that you and I can spend some time on the lake on a sunny day.

I was remiss in my ways for I was at work when Mom passed away. I was remiss for I was at work while my grandchildren grew up and moved away. I was remiss in not spending time, for yes I was at work and then Leah too passed away. Now I find myself in this same hole again and I am remiss in comforting and taking care of my new love Jan. But Dad, what can I do? All I can say in this short note is that I love you in every way.

Love your son, Allen

#2 of 5 Regrets Of The Dying: Think About These.

2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.

"This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret, but as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.”

A beautiful letter to your Dad which I'm sure will be fully and lovingly appreciated...
The work ethic is part of our society but it is getting the right balance that is tricky..
It used to be mainly men that had this problem.. Now women with full time careers are joining them..
Sometimes all that is needed is just to stop and think...before it is too late...
Best wishes always,
Diana

I've seen so many people at my workplace miss out the best quality time with their families. Some are due to financial circumstaces that they have to continually working; and yet some others are just simply due to greed. There were two that worked with the department for the longest time and could simply walked away with a good size pension but they both wanted to hang around for another year just su they could collect full pension. Believe it or not, they both were gone before they even made it to the door. (Both had heart attacks) Left are the lonely family members who would go through the rest of their lives without them. I often advice people if you are in a financial situation to retire early , then just take the early retirement and spend some quality time with family, because once a family member is gone, nothing will ever be the same.

A very sentimental letter to your dad. One to treasure in the family.

Sandie
