Longing to share a memory

Poem Artwork

You have been gone for thirty three years,

It’s not like we had a great romance.

Like two stupid kids ourselves,

Then suddenly there were five of us.

The thing that bothers me most

I think,

Are when those memories come

And I turn to say,

Hey, remember that?

But no one is there that shared them.

No one, and never will be.

And how I long to share the blame

For our sons with all their problems.

Boys need their daddies,

I didn’t know how to do it.

Just trying to grow up myself

And guess what,

I blew it.

I need to talk to you about it,

But you are never there.

I have to think it was good for my son that I got custody, but I mostly think it saved my life.
I'm sure you were exactly what they needed.

If they have the basic values instilled within them, they will survive and learn from their mistakes. My father completely rejected me. I had a stepfather, but I was never a true part of him. I learned the basics and I think I survived well enough. My sympathies for that distant loss and my congratulations on managing to survive and bring your boys to manhood, even if they have a few wrinkles yet. Bob

Yes, as Roger is stating, writing is a way of catharsis for how we feel about the decisions we made and things beyond our control.

Sorry that you blew it. I hope that I don't blow it and not get time enough to get your memoir… Still postponed.

They say writing is a form of therapy, and I guess I know that's so, but filling a void no matter how large is a mighty tall task, a mountain to climb, and memories fall short in their Sherpa role, cause the void is immense, in your heart it's a hole... but there in your boys' smiles, there in their walk, there in their struggle, their strife, and their talk, is a piece of the man you once called your own, a glimpse of his grace of his strength is on loan. He's not left entirely, he's there in some ways, he'll always be with you for now, for always. If he is glimpsed for just moments, now and again, he'll smile on your struggle, and he'll surely help you win.

In love,
Roger

I can't say that I totally understand, young lady, but I do know the pain of not having a father, even though I grew up with one...though he was distant and aloof regards me...ur boys will get past these problems, just as you are doing...e

Dear Lark,

I share your pain in the early years because my first wife died at 37. I did remarry but I can't share the older photos with anyone but the kids when they visit. That's still someone to share with. Don't forget, they have so much pain too so share what you can, whenever you can, while you still can.

Much love and blessings,

John Michael

Yes, it is too bad there wasn't a father figure around to give you some help with the boys, and although I imagine you did your best , a fathers' presence would have made things better I think. I'm sorry you carry this guilt, Lark, but writing about it, getting it off your chest, is a good thing. Believe it.
