Fowl, intent on nature's gift
Breakfast served, her mind adrift
Fails to note her treacherous guest
Here to act out nature's quest
Creeping, crawling, closing fast
Time's up once his shadow's cast.
Teeth and claws to feathered back
Red Fur mounts his cruel attack
Helpless, Fowl cries in dismay
Canines rush into affray.
Wolf-like snarls and Red Fur screams
Sounds akin to ghoulish dreams
Blood and spit infuse the air
As instincts fuel the carnage there.
Canines, working as a pack
Thwart the Red Fur's fierce attack
Red Fur flies and feathers fall
He's lost his prize from nature's call
* * *
Red Fur gone, the danger's passed
Fowl alive but fading fast
Canines gather, all distressed,
Fur stained red by battle's quest.
Watching, waiting, silent yet
Alert, their faces, hope beset.
Final laboured gasp from fowl
Landscape echoes Canine's howl.

I love the red fox, but I realize it is because I am not a farmer.
Fantastic poem.
