Do cows have a sense of smell?
If so, what scents would they repel?
Would fox scent make them turn away
In search of fine, floral bouquet?
Perhaps their snouts are more in tune
When Night Flox smiles up at the moon.
Or maybe after spring rainfall
They’ll flare their nostrils and recall
The sweetness of the fresh cut hay
The farmer brought them yesterday.
But would they shy the smell of death?
And do they ever get bad breath?
I wonder what they make of fumes
From factories, cars and old mushrooms?
Would they retreat from stench of blood,
And fill their nose with pungent mud?
I wonder if their muzzles say
The weather’s turning bad today?
It’s thoughts like these that cross my mind
Whilst walking fields and so unwind.
Such ponderings that come my way
Become my poem for the day.
