A story in rhyme.

Poem Artwork

I walk down a street in the half-light of dusk
My spirit is broken, my body a husk
The air's cold and wet but I don't feel the chill
My thoughts racing fast yet my breathing is still.
I turn at the corner my mind in a whirl
And there, at the bus stop I see a young girl
I whisper, "Please help me? I'm lost and alone."
Her eyes look right through me. An expression of stone

I walk a bit farther, the road's now familiar
I've found my way home. I'm overcome with nostalgia
I laugh loud with relief. A neighbour looks shocked
She runs back inside, her door tightly locked
Her actions confuse me, we've always been friends
Perhaps I upset her I must make amends
I just can't remember the events of today
Or what I was doing so far away

I come to the house and I pause at the gate
I'll tell them I'm sorry for being home so late
I look for my key but my bag is not here
I suddenly panic, my bones wracked with fear
What have I been doing? Where could I have been?
Am I still awake or is all this a dream?
I knock on the door and the hall light comes on
And there, in the doorway, my handsome young son

He too looks right through me. I reach out my hand
I so want to touch him but time seems to stand
So still, I don't reach him. Then he turns away
The door is now closing and I hear him say
There's nobody out there. It must be the breeze
I cry out in horror "Don't shut me out! Please?"
I sit on the doorstep, bewildered, confused
A passing cat hisses. Its face is bemused.

I stand up to leave now. My bones feel quite weary
I'm getting so tired that my vision is bleary
Perhaps there is someone in the shop on the green
Who can help me find answers about where I have been
Maybe they'll tell me why I'm being ignored
And what I can do to get my life restored
In the shop I discover the answers I seek
According to the papers, I've been dead for a week.

TRAGIC MURDER!
A YOUNG MOTHER'S LIFE WAS FORSAKEN
 WOODLAND GRAVE FOUND.
WHERE HER BODY WAS TAKEN.

I'm not much into spirits, ghosts and the after world, but I do buy into fiction writing and this one certainly gets high marks in my book.

Well done Ruan, thanks Dick.

Quite a captivating story in rhyme, and I've often wondered if deceased souls can feel disoriented, after death. I guess I'll find out one day.
