I am the ghost who is haunting the adulterer...

Poem Artwork

I watch as you come home and unlock the door
Your features are drawn, your eyes to the floor
Your shoulders are slumped, your manner resigned
A picture of misery, sad moment, defined

You stand in the hallway. My picture is there
You lift it down gently and sit on the stair
Gazing intently, your face holds a frown
Then firmly decisive, you place it ‘face down’

You pick up the phone and carefully dial
Then I see your face change and break into a smile
Your fingers are drumming, impatience, a fault
And somebody answers. The pleasure you sought

Gone is the façade of misery and grief
“Hi darling. It’s over,” You say with relief
A few moments later you’re packing my things
With all the excitement that happiness brings

Black bags and boxes are all being filled
I watch you in horror, my love for you chilled
In no time at all you have wiped the slate clean
No trace of my life in our house can be seen

A few hours later a lorry arrives
To carry away all the days of our lives
Somewhere inside me rage festers and grows
The treacherous pain of your adultery glows

I moan and I wail whilst pacing the floor
But all you can hear is her knock at the door
I can tell by your face she’s your cardinal sin
All blonde hair and blue eyes, she starts moving in

My cries go unheeded, no sound can I make
The love of my life was not hers to take
I tear at her hair and the flesh of her face
But my hands go right through her, my efforts, a waste

Awash in the knowledge that , as your dead wife
I'm helpless to change things. You have a new life
I gave you my love with my very last breath
And I gave you away by giving in to my death.
